In mid-May, we travelled to Nara, Hiroshima and Osaka. A highlight of the trip was spending a night on Miyajima Island, best known as the home of the Itsukushima Shrine and its massive torii gate, which appears to float in the water during high tide. The island, not far from Hiroshima, is a World Heritage Site and is considered one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. I photographed the torii gate at high tide, low tide, sunset, night and late-morning. Seeing the gate in person was an incredible experience and will definitely be one of my favorite memories from our years in Japan. I’ll write more about our trip on another day, but hope my readers won’t mind the chance to drop in today and enjoy a few glimpses of the torii gate’s beauty, too.
